Rates

Rates vary depending on the complexity and density of the material.  Arrangements are flexible and can be quoted per indexable page, as an hourly rate, per entry, or as a fixed project rate.

Factors which can effect rates:

bulletDensity of text (number of entries per page)
bulletPage size and format
bulletExtensive indexable footnotes, appendices, and/or display material including illustrations, tables, and charts
bulletMultiple indexes (addition of name and/or authors cited)
bulletIntended audience (expert, beginner, mixed)
bulletRush jobs
bulletPagination changes during index process

Project quotes

I will ask for the following information in order to provide a project quote:

bulletType of book (scholarly, trade, textbook)
bulletIntended audience (expert, beginner, mixed)
bulletLength of text (number of pages)
bulletExpected delivery date of page proof
bulletDue date for finished index

If this is the first time I have worked with you, I will also ask questions about your style requirements for the index.  If you are not sure or have no preferences, you can either send me a copy of an index that you like or I can make decisions based on what is appropriate for the text.

bulletStyle: Do you prefer us to follow your in-house style, Chicago Manual of Style, a favored index copy, or our decision?
bulletFormat: Indented or run-in?
bulletAlphabetization: Letter-by-letter or word-by-word?
bulletCross references: Do you have a preference about placement and form?
bulletCapitalization: Proper nouns and names only or first letter of all initial words in main heading?
bulletPage numbers: Full (125-129) or conflated (125-29)?
bulletPages not to be indexed: We will read introduction, footnotes, illustrations, appendices, etc. for indexing unless you request otherwise.
bulletLength of index: any size restrictions?
bulletDelivery format: How do you want index delivered- by email, disk, or hard copy?  What format- ASCII, RTF, or word processing program?

After our discussion, I will give you a rate quote and time estimate.  Once the terms of the project are agreed upon, I will send confirmation of the specifics.  This will alleviate ambiguities by putting fees, time schedule, and style requirements in writing.
