Rates
Rates vary depending on the complexity and density of the material.
Arrangements are flexible and can be quoted per indexable page, as an hourly rate, per entry, or as
a fixed project rate.
Factors which can effect rates:
 | Density of text (number of entries per page) |
 | Page size and format |
 | Extensive indexable footnotes, appendices, and/or display material
including illustrations, tables, and charts |
 | Multiple indexes (addition of name and/or authors cited) |
 | Intended audience (expert, beginner, mixed) |
 | Rush jobs |
 | Pagination changes during index process |
Project quotes
I will ask for the following information in order to provide a project quote:
 | Type of book (scholarly, trade, textbook) |
 | Intended audience (expert, beginner, mixed) |
 | Length of text (number of pages) |
 | Expected delivery date of page proof |
 | Due date for finished index |
If this is the first time I have worked with you, I will also ask questions
about your style requirements for the index. If you are not sure or have
no preferences, you can
either send me a copy of an index that you like or I can make decisions based on
what is appropriate for the text.
 | Style: Do you prefer us to follow your in-house style, Chicago
Manual of Style, a favored index copy, or our decision? |
 | Format: Indented or run-in? |
 | Alphabetization: Letter-by-letter or word-by-word? |
 | Cross references: Do you have a preference about placement and
form? |
 | Capitalization: Proper nouns and names only or first letter of all
initial words in main heading? |
 | Page numbers: Full (125-129) or conflated (125-29)? |
 | Pages not to be indexed: We will read introduction, footnotes,
illustrations, appendices, etc. for indexing unless you request otherwise. |
 | Length of index: any size restrictions? |
 | Delivery format: How do you want index delivered- by email, disk,
or hard copy? What format- ASCII, RTF, or word processing program? |
After our discussion, I will give you a rate quote and time estimate.
Once the terms of the project are agreed upon, I will send confirmation of the specifics. This will alleviate ambiguities
by putting fees, time schedule,
and style requirements in writing.
